Blue Flag beach ten years continuously
Kleinmond Beach is the only one of the seven beaches falling within the transition zone of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve that enjoys Blue Flag status and in fact has been doing it for so long that it has received a silver certificate for being a Blue Flag beach for ten years continuously.
As the Blue Flag is an international status awarded to beaches, boats and marinas that achieve excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards, this means that the Kleinmond beach is sustaining excellence in beach management and rates among the top beaches in the world.
In South Africa, this programme is managed by the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA). Overstrand Municipality has two other beaches in the Blue Flag programme: Grotto Beach in Hermanus that received a gold certificate for 15 years of continuous participation and Hawston Beach, that also received a silver certificate.
City of Cape Town’s Bikini Beach in Gordon’s Bay, on the periphery of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve is also a Blue Flag beach and the place to go for a swim when the Southeaster is howling in Kleinmond.
As the board of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve Company we have great appreciation for these two local authorities for investing money and other resources in a worthwhile programme. This also requires partnerships from civil society as can be seen in the accompanying photo taken at the flag hoisting ceremony at Kleinmond Beach, where you can see law enforcement officers, life savers supported by Coca-Cola, operational staff, area management, ward committee members and councillors. Second from right in the middle row is Deputy Mayor Rudolf Smith, who officiated at the event.
