The exciting news this time, especially for the investors and collectors in our midst, is that the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve will be the subject of a special series of gold and sterling silver coins that will be released by the SA Mint on 23 September at an event at the Waterkloof Restaurant near Somerset West. At this occasion we will also highlight the wines and produce of our region and the vegetables will come from the Haygrove tunnels managed by the agri co-ops that was formed as part of our Catchment to Coast Project.
This launch will go hand in hand with major media exposure to the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve and reporters from all the major television stations and news media will be brought to the area the day before. They will be treated to an overnight stay in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve’s award-winning Eco-Cabins (thanks to CapeNature) and view the area from a helicopter.
There will be an annual release of such coins, but the honour to be on the first set was given to the Kogelberg Biosphere, which was the first to get recognition from UNESCO in 1998. Get more information by clicking here.
The SA Post Office is also going to issue special stamps and first day covers to create awareness of biosphere reserves and more information will follow as we receive it.
