At our last Management Committee meeting appreciation was expressed to the Volunteer Wildlife Services, Vanya Jones and other members that took initiative to give support to firefighters involved in combating the devastating fires in the areas of Botrivier, Elgin and Highlands mid-January.

Water and other refreshments, even a watermelon, was dropped off at the offices we share with the Hangklip-Kleinmond Tourism Bureau on 18 January and taken by volunteers to the incident command centers set up by the Overberg FPA (Houwhoek) and CapeNature.

Kleinmond Animal Welfare Society, together with Wildlife SPCA, Grabouw AWS and Hermanus AWS also helped out on farms with the finding and treatment of injured animals.

According to Director Edward Molteno the management of the fire was impressive, although an area of approximately 9000 ha was destroyed,consisting of:

  • 1000 ha of Plantation (Cape Pine/MTO);
  • 4000 ha of Kogelberg Nature Reserve; and
  • 4000 ha of private land.

A sincere thank you to all firefighters and volunteers for their hard work during this time.  We salute you!

Below is a photo of donations received and delivered to the Incident Command Centers at Kromco / Houwhoek Inn and at Iona Farm where firemen were fighting fires.
